With all but one branch of the military represented among Averitt associates (no one from Space Force just yet!), we’re proud to be considered one of the most military focused, friendly, and ready carriers in the industry.
The numbers tell the story
A recent survey of our associates shows that just over 50% of our military veterans served in the U.S. Army. The next closest branch is the U.S. Navy with 16.49%, then the Marine Corps with 13.95% just edges out the U.S. Air Force with 13.53%. The National Guard (10.36%) and Coast Guard (1.69%) round out the list. Overall, approximately 16% of our workforce is made up of veterans, representing hundreds of Averitt associates.
Military veteran careers
So why do so many military veterans choose a career with us? First, trucking is a great fit for veterans because the same skills you honed in service to our country will serve you well on the road. As Military.com notes, “most military personnel are technologically savvy, are motivated hard workers, and often have worked with heavy equipment. Even those who haven't worked with heavy equipment possess the grit and work ethic that many trucking companies are seeking in an employee.”
Secondly, trucking, especially with an established, growing carrier like Averitt, offers the career stability military veterans want after leaving active duty. For our professional driver roles, we have programs available that help veterans transition quickly into a variety of positions.
One important aspect of an Averitt career that appeals to many military veterans is our culture and professional image standards. We offer a culture of support and structure for building strong careers that grow. Just like in the military, Averitt has hundreds of career possibilities where your skills can shine. With multiple business units and facilities across the U.S., we’re certain you’ll find your place. And because we promote from within, your career can grow and change with your personal and professional needs. In addition, we present a professional, uniformed appearance to the world as all drivers, dock associates and mechanics wear uniform items. Our associates love our Averitt red, and every year, associates receive a uniform allotment that can be used toward the purchase of new uniform items through our Uniformity program.
Other advantages that set us apart for drivers include profit sharing, cash bonuses for referrals, flexible home time, PTO, assigned equipment, safe parking at our service centers, excellent health benefits and much more.
National recognition and commitment
Viqtory conducts the national Military Friendly® Company survey every year to highlight companies that support veterans, other members of the military community and their families in transitioning from military to the civilian world. For 2022, Averitt was recognized as a Military Friendly Company, as well as a Military Spouse Friendly Employer and a Military Friendly Brand. Because of our exceptional military programs, we were also awarded bronze distinction as a Military Friendly Employer.
Averitt Chairman and CEO Gary Sasser, who served as a U.S. Marine Reservist, feels every veteran deserves to work for a company that values their service, and we’re proud to be a place that our nation’s service members can call home.
