A core pillar of our culture is built on supporting associates at every stage of their careers, and Sierra Ray’s story is a powerful testament to that. As a city driver based in Oklahoma City, Sierra’s path to joining our team is deeply personal and inspiring, showcasing both her strength and the unwavering support she’s received along the way.
Sierra’s journey began during a difficult time—her husband, Tony Ray, was an Averitt associate who encouraged her to join our team before his passing. In need of a job, and with no prior experience, Sierra found her way into a part-time office position thanks to the understanding and support of our Oklahoma City Service Center Director, Wayne Baker. It was an opportunity that would change the course of her life.
“From the time my husband passed away, this company has been a blessing,” Sierra shares.
About seven months after Tony’s death, she transitioned into a full-time dock position in November 2021. Balancing work and family life, she embraced the challenge of learning new skills while being there for her four children and grandson. Soon, she wanted to push her abilities even further, made simpler by the resources in our Dock-to-Driver Training Program.
My husband loved his job and always encouraged me to get my CDL,” Sierra explains. “At first, it was intimidating, but with the support of Averitt, I knew I could do it.”
Facing Challenges with Confidence
Sierra admits that entering a traditionally male-dominated industry came with its challenges, but her mindset was determined: “I saw only men doing it, and the physical aspects of the job—especially in extreme weather—intimidated me. But I went in strong, trusting their training. I thought, ‘If other women can do it, why can’t I?’”
With the right support, she proved to herself and others that she was more than capable.
“The trainers in Cookeville, Tenn., never made me feel like I couldn’t do it. They gave me the tools I needed to succeed, and they truly cared about my growth,” she says.
Support That Feels Like Family
Sierra speaks highly of the family atmosphere that defines our culture. From day one, she’s felt connected to her fellow associates and leadership.
“Everyone looks out for each other. We call to check in, and we’re always ready to help,” Sierra says.
Our associates are always looking out for one another, creating a community of trust and collaboration. From checking in on each other to helping out with questions or challenges on the road, associates feel connected and cared for every step of the way.
“It’s one of the best things about being here,” Sierra adds. “You’re not just another driver—you’re part of a family.”
Celebrating Successes, Big and Small
One of Sierra’s proudest moments came when she passed her CDL test on the first try—a milestone made even more special by the presence of Brian Olson, the same trainer who had worked with her husband.
“I was nervous at first, but once I got into the groove, it felt amazing. Everyone was so happy for me when I passed, and it felt like a full-circle moment.” She even recreated a photo of her husband and Brian that they took after he passed his CDL.
For Sierra, each step in her journey has been a source of pride. “It’s an incredible feeling to accomplish something you once thought was out of reach.”
To women considering a career with our team, Sierra offers this advice: “It gives you such a sense of pride to say you drive for Averitt. The uniforms, the pay, the equipment—everything is top-notch. Meeting their high expectations pushes you to improve in all areas of life. They encourage women, and the support is there every step of the way.”
Sierra’s journey with us is more than just a career—it’s a story of empowerment, growth, and overcoming challenges with the support of a company that truly cares. “This career has helped me in so many ways,” she says, reflecting on how far she’s come.
