Beating the Heat: Summer Tips to Keep Your Cool on the Road

Post Date - Jun 13, 2025

As summer turns up the heat, life behind the wheel can feel a little more intense. Long days, high temps, and constant sun exposure can all take a toll on your comfort and energy—especially when your cab is your second home. But staying cool on the road isn’t just about comfort—it’s about safety, focus, and keeping your body running at its best.

Here are some simple, smart ways to beat the summer heat and stay cool behind the wheel this summer.

1. Hydration Comes First

When the sun’s blazing, it’s easy to get dehydrated without even realizing it. Staying hydrated helps regulate your body temperature, boosts energy, and keeps your mind sharp.

Try this:

  • Ensure you have water available while out on the road.
  • Add a slice of lemon or cucumber for a refreshing twist.
  • Aim for water over an excess of sugary or caffeinated drinks, which can actually dehydrate you.

2. Dress for the Weather

Wearing light, breathable clothing makes a big difference. Natural fabrics like cotton and moisture-wicking materials help your body stay cool—even during long stretches on the road.   Also, consider wearing a lightweight hat for sun protection as well as a pair of UV-blocking sunglasses.

And don’t forget—we have your back when it comes to staying cool and professional. As part of our Uniformity program, associates receive an annual uniform allotment to help maintain a polished and consistent appearance. Our uniforms are designed to be comfortable, breathable, and road-ready—perfect for hot weather driving. We were one of the first companies in the industry to implement a professional uniform standard, and that tradition continues today. Looking sharp isn’t just about style—it’s about showing customers they’re working with a team they can trust.

Quick tip:
Keep a clean change of clothes handy in case your first set gets too sweaty or uncomfortable during loading or fueling.

3. Don’t Overwork Your A/C

We all rely on the air conditioning, but blasting it nonstop can actually overwork the system and reduce efficiency.

For better performance:

  • Use the recirculate setting to keep cool air in.
  • Crack a window when first getting in to let the trapped heat escape.
  • Our maintenance team is here for you – regularly stop by and get your air filter cleaned or replaced to help your system run smoother.
  • Use your APU to help keep you cool while also conserving fuel and keeping you efficient.

4. Snack Smart

Heavy meals can make you feel sluggish—especially in the heat. Lighter snacks and meals can keep your energy levels up without weighing you down.

Think:

  • Fresh fruit like watermelon, grapes, or oranges
  • Protein-packed options like nuts, yogurt, or hard-boiled eggs
  • Avoid salty snacks, which can increase dehydration

5. Cool Down on Breaks

Breaks are the perfect time to reset—and cool off.

Use your break time to:

  • Step into air-conditioned rest stops or one of our Driver Support Centers available
  • Use a damp washcloth or cooling towel on your neck or wrists
  • Stretch in the shade or breeze for a few minutes

Even a few minutes away from the cab can help your body cool down and recharge.

6. Keep Cooling Essentials Close

A few key items can make a big difference during hot weather—especially when the sun’s beating down and there’s no shade in sight. Stocking your cab with a handful of cooling essentials can help you stay comfortable, alert, and refreshed all day long.

  • Portable fan or handheld mister
  • Cooling towel or bandana
  • Electrolyte tablets or drink

7. Know the Signs of Overheating

Your truck isn’t the only thing that can overheat. Pay attention to your body. Signs like dizziness, excessive sweating, headache, and nausea may point to heat exhaustion.

If you start to feel off, don’t wait—pull over, hydrate, and cool down.

Let’s Stay Safe—and Comfortable—Out There

Our team spends long hours on the road, and the summer sun doesn’t make it any easier. But with a few smart habits and a little planning, staying cool is completely doable. A comfortable driver is a safer, more focused driver—and that’s something we can all get behind.

So let’s take care of ourselves and each other this summer. Keep that water bottle full, the A/C humming, and those sunglasses within reach. Because when we beat the heat, we’re better prepared to handle whatever the road throws our way.
